What is sustainable clothing?
Sustainable clothing is a collective term for clothing that is made without harming people, animals or the environment. The process of making sustainable clothing takes longer because higher quality materials are needed. Purchasing green raw materials and promoting a circular economy costs money. And this affects the price of the final product. Ethical fashion brands believe in living wages for everyone in the supply chain, from farmers to clothing manufacturers. All too often, fast fashion is responsible for conditions of use – and this is unacceptable to those who make sustainable clothing. The textile industry wreaks havoc between clothing production and the waste that is discarded – so brands and consumers have an interest in improving these issues.
How is sustainable clothing made?
Sustainable methods of making clothes mean that dyes are made from environmentally friendly, chemical-free materials. Renewable energy is used in the production process and sustainable fabrics are used. The aim is to make the lifespan of the garment as long as possible. In addition, old materials such as waste products are recycled.
The Good Housekeeping Institutes Textile Lab
According to a June 2012 report by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), some 14.2 million workers worldwide are victims of forced labour and exploitation, including in the manufacture of garments.
Several brands are focusing on solving different problems in the fashion industry. The Good Housekeeping Institutes Textile Lab worked with an environmental consultant and used their textile expertise to analyse problems and find the best brands that address environmental and social issues.
What can you do yourself?
Consider your wardrobe. Do you really need as many clothes as are hanging in your closet, and does that new item need to be added? Think carefully about which items you do or do not need and where you buy new clothes. You can buy several brands that design and sell sustainable products, Ludus is a brand that sells sustainable clothing. Several brands have a special environmentally friendly and eco-friendly line. You can also give your clothes a second life by, for example, taking them to a second-hand shop. You also have apps for that like Vinted for example, that is very popular right now
